# Change roles or remove members in an organization or project

Change a person's [role](/admin/understand-roles-and-permissions) or remove them from the **Members** page of **Organization settings**, or of a project's **Project settings**. Changes apply as soon as you make them; you don't need **Save Changes**.

::: info Before you start

* **Who:** organization Owners and Admins, and Project Admins on their project. You can give roles up to your own, and you can't change or remove anyone whose role is higher than yours.
* **Where:** the web app.
  :::

## Change someone's organization role

1. Select your organization's icon at the top of the sidebar, then the gear next to its name (**Organization settings**).
2. Select **Members**.
3. In the **Members** list, select the person's role.
4. Choose the new role. revis.io shows "Role updated".

The menu lists roles up to your own, and never Owner. The Owner's row, and the row of anyone ranked above you, shows the role as plain text and has no remove button.

## Transfer ownership of the organization

Only the Owner can do this.

::: danger
After the transfer you're an Admin, and only the new Owner can transfer ownership back.
:::

1. In **Organization settings** > **Members**, select the role of the person who'll become the Owner.
2. Select **Transfer ownership…**.
3. In **Transfer ownership?**, select **Transfer ownership**.

revis.io shows "Ownership transferred to" and their name, and emails you both. The Owner can't change their own role or leave the organization any other way.

## Remove someone from the organization

Removing someone signs them out of revis.io on all their devices, in every organization they belong to. It also deletes their roles on this organization's projects.

1. In **Organization settings** > **Members**, select the remove button (x) at the end of the person's row.
2. In **Remove from Organization**, select **Remove**.
3. To change your mind, select **Undo** in the message that follows. Undo restores their organization role only, so give them their project roles again.

## Change or remove several people at once

1. On the **Members** page, select **Select users** (the checkbox icon above the list).
2. Select the checkbox of each person.
3. Choose a role from **Change role**, or select **Remove selected members** (the trash icon) and confirm with **Remove**.

There's no Undo for a bulk removal.

## Change roles and remove members on a project

1. Open the project and select the gear next to its name at the top of the page (**Project settings**).
2. Select **Members**.
3. To change a role, select the person's role and choose another, up to your own level on the project.
4. To remove someone, select the remove button (x) at the end of their row, then **Remove**. **Undo** in the message that follows adds them back with the role they had.

Removing someone from a project doesn't remove them from the organization, and they keep the access their organization role gives: they can still open a Public project, and Owners and Admins can open every project. To limit someone on a project, give them a lower project role instead.

Teams added to the project are listed above the members. To remove a team, select **Remove team** (the trash icon) on its row; there's no confirmation.

## Rules revis.io enforces

* You can't remove yourself. Ask another Admin, or another Project Admin on a project.
* A project must keep at least one Project Admin added directly to it (Owners, Admins, and team roles don't count). Make someone else Project Admin first; then you can step down.
* The Owner can't be removed or demoted. Transfer ownership first.

When revis.io refuses a change, the error message says why. A bulk role change in **Organization settings** only says how many changes failed.
