# Play, step and jump through a video

The controls under the video play it, step it one frame at a time, and change its speed. Most of them also have a keyboard shortcut, so you can keep your eyes on the frame. revis.io plays forward only; there's no reverse playback.

::: info Before you start

* **Who:** anyone who can open the review, including guests on a share link.
* **Where:** the web app's player. To open it, see [Open a review and preview its items](/reviews/open-a-review).
* **You need:** a video, audio item, or whiteboard. Images have no timeline.
  :::

## Play and pause

1. Select the play button at the left end of the timeline, or press **Space**. Select it again, or press **Space**, to pause.
2. To move through the video, drag along the timeline.

**Loop playback** is on unless you turn it off, so the video starts again from the beginning when it ends. Select **Loop playback** or press `⌘L` (`Ctrl+L` on Windows and Linux) to switch it.

## Step frame by frame

1. Pause the video.
2. Select **Previous frame** or **Next frame**, or press the left or right arrow key.

Other ways to move:

| To | Press |
| --- | --- |
| Skip back or forward 10 seconds | **U** or **O** |
| Skip back or forward 10 frames (10 seconds in videos longer than 2 minutes) | **Shift+Left** or **Shift+Right** |
| Go to the first or last frame | **Home** or **End** |
| Go to the previous or next item in the review | **Option+Left** or **Option+Right** (**Alt** on Windows and Linux) |

## Jump to a frame or chapter

1. Press **F**. The frame readout next to the timeline becomes a box.
2. Type a frame number and press **Enter**. Press **Esc** to cancel.

The readout shows frames by default, or whatever your project's admin chose. Select the readout to switch between frames, timecode, and seconds. Your choice lasts until you reload the page.

Some items have chapters. Open **Details** on the right side of the player and select a chapter to jump to it.

## Change the speed

1. Select **Playback speed** (the gauge below the timeline). At normal speed it shows the frame rate; otherwise it shows the speed.
2. Choose a speed from 4x down to 0.25x, or select **Custom...** to set your own.

From the keyboard, press **J** to slow down, **L** to speed up, and **K** to pause and go back to normal speed. **J** stops at 0.25x; it never plays backward.

## Volume and audio scrubbing

* Use the speaker button next to the transport controls to mute, or the slider to change the volume.
* To hear the sound while you drag along the timeline, select **Settings** (the gear) and turn on **Audio Scrubbing**.
