# Create and rename a review

A review is an ordered list of items that people play, comment on, and approve together. Create one from the project's **Reviews** page with **Add Review**, then add media to it.

::: info Before you start

* **Who:** Project Admins and Contributors, and the organization's Owners, Admins, and Members unless the project gives them a lower role. Reviewers and Viewers can't create or rename reviews. They still see **Edit review** and **Edit**, but saving shows **Failed to update review** and the old name comes back.
* **Where:** the web app.
* **You need:** a project you belong to.
  :::

## Create a review

1. Open the project and select **Reviews** in the left sidebar.
2. Select **Add Review** at the top of the page. A form opens above the list.
3. Type a name in **Review Name**, up to 255 characters.
4. Optionally, type a description in **Review Description**, up to 10,000 characters. It shows under the name in the list.
5. Select **Create**, or press **Enter** in the name field.

The new review appears in the list, expanded and ready for you to add media. To close the form without creating anything, select **Cancel** or press **Esc**.

If the form stays open after you select **Create**, revis.io couldn't create the review, for example because the name is longer than 255 characters. Shorten it and try again. If you don't see **Add Review** at all, your role can't create reviews; ask a Project Admin or an organization Admin.

## Create a smart review

A smart review fills itself with the project's files that match a filter, such as "videos approved in the last 7 days" or "everything in the Lighting folder". revis.io keeps the list up to date: when you open the review, files that now match are added and files that no longer match drop out. Their notes stay with them.

1. Open the **Create Review** dialog as above and type a name.
2. Turn on **Smart review**.
3. Set the filter. Every field you leave empty matches everything:
   * **Has the words:** words in the file's name or description.
   * **Creator:** search for people and press **Enter**, then select them. Select **Me** for your own files. You can add several people.
   * **File type** and **Status:** select one or more. A file matches if it has any of the selected types or statuses.
   * **Uploaded:** **Any time**, **In the last…** a number of days, or **Between dates** with **From** and **To**.
   * **Location:** **Anywhere in the project**, **In any review**, **In any folder**, or **In selected folders or reviews**. With the last one, pick **Folders** (with **Include subfolders**) and **Reviews**. Smart reviews can't be picked here.
   * **Order:** **Newest first**, **Oldest first**, **Name (A–Z)** or **Name (Z–A)**.
4. Set **Limit**: how many files the review holds, up to the maximum shown next to it. The default is 25.
5. Check the preview under the filter. It shows how many files match ("1000+" for very large matches) and the first matching files. If it says the filter is too broad, narrow it down, for example by type, folder or date.
6. Select **Create Review**.

Smart reviews show a **Smart** badge on the **Reviews** page; point to it to see when the review last updated. Select **Smart** in the left sidebar to list only smart reviews.

You can comment on, draw on, approve and share a smart review like any other. Because its files come from the filter, you can't add, remove or reorder files or make sections by hand; the player says "Files in a smart review come from its filters." Uploading a new version of one of its files, renaming its playlist, and grouping it into sections by creator, upload date, type, wildcard or status still work.

A project can hold a limited number of smart reviews. If **Create Review** says the project already has the maximum, freeze or delete one first.

### Change, refresh or freeze a smart review

Right-click a smart review on the **Reviews** page, or select its three-dot button, then choose:

* **Edit smart filters…** to change the filter or the limit. The review updates when you select **Save**.
* **Refresh now** to update the review straight away.
* **Freeze as regular review…** to stop updating it. The review keeps the files it holds now and becomes a regular review you can edit by hand. This can't be undone.

In the player, select the **Smart** chip next to the review name for the same actions. Only people who can edit the review see **Edit filters…** and **Freeze…**.

### Take a snapshot

A snapshot turns what a smart review holds right now into a regular review, while the smart review keeps updating from its filter. Use it to keep a fixed set of files, for example the cut you sent for approval.

1. Right-click the smart review on the **Reviews** page, or select its three-dot button, and choose **Take snapshot**. In the player, open the menu next to the review name and choose **Take snapshot**.
2. The new review is named after the smart review with today's date, for example "Dailies – 30 Oct 2026". You can rename it like any review.

In the player you land in the new review on the file you were watching. On the **Reviews** page you stay where you are and the new review appears in the list.

Notes on those files move to the snapshot, so they no longer show in the smart review. The message after you take the snapshot says how many notes moved. Share links aren't copied, so share the snapshot again if people need it. You need to be able to edit the review, and a smart review with no files can't be snapshotted.

## Rename a review or change its description

1. On the **Reviews** page, point to the review's name and select **Edit review** (the pencil). You can also right-click the review, or select its three-dot button, and choose **Edit**.
2. Change the name, the description, or both.
3. Select **Save**, or press **Enter** in the name field. Press **Esc** to cancel.

Share links to the review keep working after a rename.
