# Delete files, folders, and reviews and restore them

Deleted files, folders, and reviews go to the project's **Trash**. From there, an admin can restore them or delete them permanently. Nothing in the Trash expires on its own.

::: info Before you start

* **Who:** the organization's Owners and Admins, and the project's Project Admins. Everyone else in the project can open the **Trash** and see what's in it, but can't delete, restore, or permanently delete anything.
* **Where:** the web app.
  :::

## Delete files or a folder

Files you remove go to the Trash at once, without asking you to confirm, and there's no undo: restore them from the Trash instead. Deleting a folder also sends every subfolder and file inside it to the Trash.

### Delete files

1. Open the project and select **Files & Folders** in the left sidebar.
2. Right-click a file and select **Remove**. To remove several, select them, right-click one, and select **Remove items**, or select the trash icon (**Remove selected items**) in the bar that appears.

### Delete a folder

1. In **Files & Folders**, right-click the folder and select **Delete**.
2. Select **Delete** in **Delete Folder**.

**Remove** inside a review is different: it takes the file out of that review only, and the file stays in **Files & Folders**.

## Delete a review

1. On the **Reviews** page, point to the review, open its menu (the three dots), and select **Delete review**. You can also right-click the review.
2. revis.io deletes it straight away and shows **1 review deleted** with **Undo** for about six seconds. After that, restore it from the Trash.

To delete several reviews, select **Select reviews** (the checkbox icon next to the search box), check the reviews, select **Delete selected reviews** (the trash icon), then select **Delete** in **Delete Reviews?**. revis.io shows **2 reviews deleted**, and so on, with **Undo**.

Deleting a review doesn't delete its files. Files in **Files & Folders** stay there, even if you later [delete the review permanently](#delete-something-permanently).

## Restore something from the Trash

1. Open the project and select **Trash** in the left sidebar.
2. Choose a tab: **All**, **Items** (your files), **Reviews**, or **Folders**.
3. Open a row's menu (the vertical dots at the end of the row) and select **Restore**. To restore several, select their rows and select **Restore** in the bar at the top.

revis.io shows **Restored**, and the row leaves the Trash: files return to their folder, and reviews reappear on the **Reviews** page. A file kept by a folder's permanent delete has no folder any more: find it under **All Files** in **Files & Folders**. Restoring a folder also restores the subfolders and files that were deleted with it. If a row stays in the Trash after you select **Restore**, reload the page and try again; revis.io doesn't show an error. Deleted projects don't appear in the Trash.

## Delete something permanently

::: danger
**Delete Permanently** can't be undone.

* A file deleted this way is also removed from every review that uses it.
* Permanently deleting a folder also deletes its subfolders and the deleted files in them. Some files stay in the Trash; see [Delete Permanently fails or keeps a file](#delete-permanently-fails-or-keeps-a-file).
* Permanently deleting a review also deletes its files that are in the Trash and used nowhere else. See [Files kept when you permanently delete a review](#files-kept-when-you-permanently-delete-a-review).
  :::

1. In the **Trash**, open a row's menu and select **Delete Permanently**. To delete several, select their rows and select **Delete Permanently** in the bar at the top.
2. Confirm with **Delete Permanently**. revis.io shows **Permanently deleted**.

### Delete Permanently fails or keeps a file

revis.io won't permanently delete a file that's still processing, or that a screen recording's edit uses as a clip (a recording's edit can include clips from other files). To delete such a file:

* If it's still processing, wait until it's ready, then select **Delete Permanently** on it in the **Items** tab.
* If it's used as a clip, select **Delete Permanently** on that file alone in the **Items** tab. **Failed to permanently delete** names the recordings that use it. If you no longer need them:
  1. If a recording isn't in the Trash yet, remove it in **Files & Folders** (see [Delete files](#delete-files)).
  2. In the **Trash**, open the **Items** tab, open each recording's menu, and select **Delete Permanently**. Its edit goes with it.
  3. Select **Delete Permanently** on the file again.
* If you still need a recording, you can't permanently delete the file.

Even a recording that's in the Trash blocks the delete, because you could restore it. A permanent folder delete is the exception: recordings deleted with the folder don't block its files.

The refusal reads, for example: "“Interview” can't be permanently deleted: it's used as a clip in the edit of “Highlights”. Remove it from that edit first." Ignore its last sentence: deleting the clip in the recording's editor doesn't release the file. With several rows, the message gives only the first reason.

After you permanently delete a folder, the files it kept stay in the Trash, under the **Items** tab, outside any folder. **Some files kept** names up to two of the clips, counts the rest, and says why; files still processing get no message.

### Files kept when you permanently delete a review

When you permanently delete a review, revis.io keeps a file if the file, or another version of it, is:

* in **Files & Folders**
* in a folder in the Trash
* in another review, even one in the Trash
* taken out of another review, and that removal hasn't been permanently deleted
* used as a clip in another recording's edit

revis.io also keeps files that are still processing.

To delete a file that stayed:

1. If it's in **Files & Folders**, right-click it and select **Remove**.
2. In the **Trash**, open the **Items** tab (it also lists files deleted with a folder), open the file's menu, and select **Delete Permanently**. If **Failed to permanently delete** appears, see [Delete Permanently fails or keeps a file](#delete-permanently-fails-or-keeps-a-file).
