# Upload a new version and see version history

When you have a newer export of a file, upload it as a new version. revis.io stacks it on the original, and each version keeps its own comments. When you upload from a review, that review switches to the new version.

::: info Before you start

* **Who:** to upload a new version, or switch a review to another version, the organization's Owners, Admins, and Members, and the project's Project Admins and Contributors. Anyone who can see the item can open its version list.
* **Where:** the web app.
* **You need:** the item in a review or in **Files & Folders**, the new file in a supported format up to 10 GB, and media uploads turned on for your organization.
  :::

## Upload a new version

1. In the player, point to the item's name at the top and select **Item actions** (the three dots next to it).
2. Select **Upload new versions**, then choose one or more files.
3. Follow the uploads in **Uploads** at the bottom right. You can pause one, or cancel it to skip that file.

On the **Reviews** page or in **Files & Folders**, right-click the item and select **Upload new versions** there instead.

When you choose several files, each becomes its own version, numbered in filename order: `logo_v2.png` comes before `logo_v10.png`. In a review, the item switches to the last of them.

The new version keeps the item's name and folder. In a review, the item switches to the new version as soon as the files have uploaded, and shows a version badge: **V2** after the first new version, then **V3**, and so on. Other reviews that hold the item keep the version they had. In **Files & Folders**, the item's tile shows the new version. While revis.io processes the file, the item shows **Processing...**.

Items linked to Autodesk Flow Production Tracking don't offer **Upload new versions**. Flow manages their versions.

## Add new versions by dropping files

When you drop or upload files whose names match items in the review, or in the folder you're viewing in **Files & Folders**, **Matching files found** opens. Choose **Add as new versions** to stack each matching file on its match. [Add media to a review](/uploading/add-media-to-a-review#when-a-file-has-the-same-name-as-an-item) explains the other choices and how names match.

revis.io doesn't read version numbers in names, so `shot_v002.mov` doesn't match `shot_v001.mov`.

## See version history

1. Select the version badge at the top left of the item's thumbnail, for example **V2**. The list shows every version, newest first, with who uploaded it and when.
2. To show another version in this review, select it in the list.

The badge is red when the version shown isn't the newest one. It shows in the player's playlist and in the grid of a review or **Files & Folders**; an item that has never had a new version has no badge. Switching the version in a review clears the item's trim, and other reviews that hold the item keep their own version.

From the list you can also select **Upload new versions**, or **Compare versions** when there are two or more.

## If the upload doesn't go through

In each case, the current version stays as it is, unless the file uploaded but revis.io couldn't start processing it: then the new version is still added and the review switches to it. When you upload several files, the others still go through.

* **Unsupported file format** or **File too large** names the file revis.io refused. Check the [supported formats and limits](/uploading/supported-formats-and-limits).
* **Uploads disabled** means an admin has turned off media uploads for your organization.
* **Failed to upload new version**, followed by the file name (or **Failed to upload N new versions** with the names listed), covers anything else. Try again, and see [An upload stopped, vanished, or failed](/troubleshooting/an-upload-or-file-failed).
