Compare versions of an item

Updated Oct 12, 2026

Compare versions of an item

Compare versions shows an item's versions next to each other in the player, oldest on the left and newest on the right. With two versions on screen, you can switch layouts or wipe between them. Playback, scrubbing, and zoom move all versions together.

Before you start

  • Who: anyone who can open the review. Guests on a share link can compare only the versions that are in the shared review; if it holds only one version of the item, Compare versions does nothing.
  • Where: the web app's player.
  • You need: an item with at least two versions. To add one, upload a new version of the item.

Show the versions side by side

  1. Open the review in the player. If the playlist on the left is hidden, select Show playlist.
  2. Point to the item, select its three-dot menu, and choose Compare versions. Or select the item's version badge, such as V2, and choose Compare versions at the bottom of the list. If you can edit the review, selecting a version in that list instead makes it the current version for everyone.
  3. Select a pane's label bar to choose which version you hear. New comments go to that version.

Each label bar shows a letter, the item name, and the version number; the highest number is the newest. Three or more versions appear in a grid. If the three-dot menu has no Compare versions, use the version badge.

Change the layout or wipe between two versions

  1. With three or more versions, select the X (Remove from compare) on a pane's label bar until two are left.
  2. In the toolbar at the top of the player, choose a layout: Side-by-side, Stacked, or Overlay (A/B).
  3. In Overlay (A/B), a line divides the two versions. Drag the dot in the middle of the line to move it. Drag one of the two dots beside it to turn the line; hold ⌥ (Alt on Windows and Linux) to turn it in 5° steps.
  4. To fade between the versions instead, select the wipe button (Wipe divider on while the line shows) to hide the line, then drag the slider. Swap top layer puts the other version on top.

With the keyboard, select the middle dot and use the arrow keys to move the line; hold Shift to turn it.

Stop comparing

Select Exit compare (the X at the right end of the toolbar) or press Esc, which also pauses playback. Selecting another item in the playlist also ends the comparison.

Limits

  • A comment on a version that isn't in the review's playlist doesn't save.
  • You can't draw while comparing, and the color controls are hidden.
  • Up to 12 versions fit on screen, and no more than four of them can be videos. A video with more than four versions shows only its four oldest, so the newest is missing, and revis.io briefly says "Up to 4 videos can be compared at once".
  • With three or four videos, each plays at a lower resolution.
