Draw on a frame

Updated Oct 11, 2026

Draw on a frame

Pause the video, press D, and draw on the frame with the pen, a shape, an arrow, or text. revis.io saves your drawing automatically and marks the frame with a tick on the timeline. revis.io's UI calls drawings "sketches" in some places.

Before you start

  • Who: anyone who can comment on the review: Owners, Admins, Members, Project Admins, Contributors, and Reviewers. Viewers can't draw. Guests can draw when the share link allows Annotate, and some links ask them to confirm their email first (see Comment, draw and set status as a guest).
  • Where: the web app.
  • You need: a browser with WebGPU, such as current Chrome or Edge, or Safari 26 or later, with hardware acceleration on. Drawing has no fallback: if the browser has no WebGPU, the Drawing tools toolbar doesn't appear, and revis.io shows a short notice instead.

Draw an arrow

  1. Go to the frame you want to mark.
  2. If the video is playing, press Space to pause it.
  3. Press D to turn on drawing mode.
  4. Choose Arrow in the Drawing tools toolbar.
  5. Drag on the frame from the tail of the arrow to its tip.
  6. Press D again to leave drawing mode.

The toolbar floats over the viewer and hides while the video plays, so pause first. D returns to the tool you used last, which is the Pen the first time. Esc doesn't leave drawing mode.

Choose another tool

  • Pen for freehand marks. Press B to choose it.
  • A shape button that remembers your last choice: Rectangle, Circle, Line, or Freeform shape.
  • Arrow. Select it again to switch to Arrow + Text, which asks for a label after you drag.
  • Text. The Font size slider in the left panel runs from 10 to 120.

The shapes and the plain Arrow belong to the full tool set, which is on by default. Turn it on or off under Drawing settings (the gear).

Fix a mistake

  1. Select Undo, or press ⌘Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows and Linux).
  2. To bring the change back, select Redo, or press ⌘⇧Z (Ctrl+Shift+Z or Ctrl+Y).

WARNING

A frame has one shared drawing. Anyone who can draw on it can erase what you drew, and you can erase theirs.

Save and share your drawing

revis.io saves a drawing about a second after each stroke and when you leave drawing mode. There is no Save button. If saving fails, an error titled Sketch appears; draw the stroke again. People in the same live session see your strokes as you draw them.

A frame with a drawing shows an orange tick on the timeline. Select Previous annotation or Next annotation to jump between frames with drawings or comments. Drawings don't appear in the Notes list.
