Group and reorder items with sections
Sections group a playlist's items under headings. In Manual mode you create and name the sections yourself. The other modes build them from item details. Every review has at least one playlist, and revis.io saves the mode and the sections with each playlist, so the Reviews page and the player show the same grouping. The Reviews page shows a review's first playlist.
Before you start
- Who: Owners, Admins, Members, Project Admins, and Contributors can create, rename, and reorder sections and change the mode. Only Owners, Admins, and Project Admins can delete a section or use Remove All Sections. Reviewers and Viewers can fold, play, and compare sections but can't change them.
- Where: the web app, on the Reviews page and in the player.
- You need: a review with items.
WARNING
revis.io can show controls your role can't use: the Sections menu and item dragging on the Reviews page, and Delete section in the player. The server then refuses the change, so it isn't saved.
Choose how sections are made
revis.io offers six modes:
- Manual is the default. You create the sections and decide what goes in them.
- By creator makes one section per person who uploaded items.
- By upload date makes one section per upload day, newest first, named Today, Yesterday, then the date. Days are counted in UTC.
- By type makes Videos, Images, Audio, PDFs, 3D Models, Whiteboards, and Canvases sections, and Other for anything else.
- By wildcard names sections after part of each item's name.
- By status makes one section per item status, in the order of your project's status list. Items without a status go in No status, last.
To choose one:
- On the Reviews page, expand a review and select Sections. In the player, select Sections (the list icon) at the top of the playlist.
- Under Section mode, choose a mode.
- If you chose By wildcard, finish in the By Wildcard dialog, described next.
In the other five modes you can't rename or delete sections, add media to them, or drag items between them. Switch to Manual to edit. If revis.io can't save the mode, it shows Could not change section mode.
Group by part of the name
- Select Sections, then By wildcard. The By Wildcard dialog opens.
- Enter a Separator (the default is
_) and a Part number, where 1 is the first part. With_and part 2, an item calledsh010_comp_v003goes into a section calledcomp. - For more control, turn on Advanced and enter a Regex pattern. The first capture group becomes the section name.
- Check the Preview list. It shows each section and how many items it would hold. Items that don't match go to Ungrouped.
- Select Apply.
Create and edit sections
- In Manual mode, select Sections, then Create Section. A section named "Section 1" (or the next number) appears with its name ready to edit.
- Type a name and press Enter. Names must be different within a playlist.
- To start a section from items you already selected, right-click them and choose Create section.
- To rename a section, double-click its name, or right-click its header and choose Rename section.
- To add media to a section, select + on its header, or right-click the header and choose Add media.
- To delete a section, open the three-dot menu on its header and choose Delete section. Its items stay in the review.
Remove All Sections in the Sections menu deletes every section at once. Neither delete asks you to confirm. Collapse All and Expand All fold the sections.
Reorder items and sections
- Switch to Manual mode. On the Reviews page, the other modes don't save dragging.
- In the grid view, drag an item to a new position. revis.io saves the order a moment later.
- Drag an item onto another section to move it there.
- Drag a section header to move the whole section.
In the player, drag items in the playlist the same way.
Play or compare a section in the player
- Open the review in the player.
- Point to a section header in the playlist.
- Select Play all to play the section's videos back to back. It works when the section holds two or more items and all are videos.
- Select Compare section to compare the section's items side by side. Select it again to stop. It works for 2 to 12 items, with at most four videos.
Both work in every mode.
