I can't create, delete, share or change a status

I can't create, delete, share or change a status

If Add Review, Delete review, Share, or Copy link is missing, or a status change doesn't stick, your role in the project most likely doesn't include that action. Ask a Project Admin or an organization Admin for the role you need, then reload the page.

Before you start

  • Who: anyone using a project's Reviews page or the player.
  • Where: the web app.
  • You need: to know your role in the project. A Project Admin or an organization Admin can tell you.

Why it happens

revis.io checks your role on the server, and each action needs its own permission:

ActionRoles that can do it
Create a review (Add Review)Owner, Admin, Member, Project Admin, Contributor
Rename a review, Share, Copy link, Copy links, UnshareOwner, Admin, Member, Project Admin, Contributor
Delete a review (Delete review, the trash icon)Owner, Admin, Project Admin
Set an item's status or a review's statusOwner, Admin, Member, Project Admin, Contributor, Reviewer

Viewers can look but can't change reviews or statuses. revis.io hides most buttons your role can't use. A few still show: Reviewers and Viewers see Edit review and Edit, and Viewers see status menus on the Reviews page. Using them fails.

If a button is there but the action fails, revis.io shows one of these messages:

What you seeWhat it means
Nothing happens when you select CreateThe server refused the new review, and revis.io shows no message. The name may be over 255 characters, the description over 10,000, or your role may have changed since the page loaded.
Failed to save share link, with a reasonThe reason comes from the server. "Link sharing is turned off for this project" means external link sharing is off. "Share links in this project must have a password" means a password is required. "Share links in this project can't allow downloads" means the project hides the download option.
Couldn’t copy link, with a reasonCopy link creates a link when the review has none, so it fails for the same reasons. Could not copy the share link. usually means your browser didn't allow access to the clipboard.
Failed to copy linksThe same, for Copy links on several reviews.
Couldn’t set status and The change was reverted.Your role can't set statuses. Viewers can't; Reviewers can.
Failed to update reviewYour role can't edit reviews, or the name is too long. The name or description goes back.
Failed to delete reviews or Failed to unshare reviewsYour access changed since the page loaded, or the connection dropped.

What to do

  1. Reload the page. revis.io reads your role when it loads, so a recent role change shows only after a reload.
  2. Ask a Project Admin or an organization Admin for the role you need: Member or Contributor to create, rename, and share; Project Admin or Admin to delete.
  3. If you only need to set a status, ask for the Reviewer role. Reviewers can set item and review statuses; see Approve an item or set its status.
  4. If a share or copy-link message mentions a password, link sharing, or downloads, select Share instead of Copy link. The dialog fills in a password when your organization requires one. If link sharing is off, ask an Admin to turn on External Link Sharing in the project's or organization's link sharing settings.
  5. If nothing happens when you select Create, shorten the name to 255 characters or fewer and try again.

For what each review menu entry does, see Manage reviews from the review menu or in bulk. To rename a review, see Create and rename a review.
